Web 2.0 tools fascinate me! They open doors to many opportunities. Rather than wanting to find out more about particular tools, I want to continue to be refreshed and updated on what I have discovered, because without using these tools regularly or even semi regularly their usability becomes limited. I want to be able to share the knowledge of Web 2.0 and 2.1 with information seekers, but feel I need to be more knowledgeable myself on their correct application.
Thank you Ellen & Mylee for this opportunity and I look forward to further updates.

Malware

Malware - short for 'Malicious Software', is software such as a virus that intends to damage or disable a computer system. Being an Apple Mac owner I avoid trojan horses & worms. I have owned many and various models of Mac computers since the early 1990s. I have never experienced a virus on any of these. This is one of the reasons that I recommend Macs.

Examples of Phishing that I have experienced are the emailed 'letters from Nigeria'. Claiming to want to deposit money into my bank account - please send my bank account details. Other similar letters appear to be on a bank letterhead. Usually they are not well written, may have poor grammer and or spelling mistakes and it is easy to be suspicious of them. It surprises me that some people are so vulnerable to be sucked in by these criminals.
I do not open attachments from an unknown source.

More Mashups

lmgtfy.com

'Let me Google that for you'. What a clever title - and clever Mashup! I've been testing this out with various questions and I'm impressed. It is suggested that as Library workers we shouldn't use this, but I will be promoting it to the information seekers whom I come into contact with at the public library I work in.
The following Australian Mashup looks very interesting, though I doubt it's accuracy. Based on Census data from ABS, so it should be accurate. Gives statistical information about any location in Australia. It was one of the winners in the 'mashup Australia' Competition last year, a Government initiative.

iGoogle

Here is a screen shot of my iGoogle page. I customized it with a beach setting background, added widgets like a 'to do list', weather, currency convertor & ichat. News stories are briefed and my gmail account is listed there. I could have this as my homepage but choose not to. Why? Because I use a shared computer in my home and necessarily want my gmail account open for everyone to view. It's simple to navigate and you can easily add more or less features.

Evaluation

Flickr has become somewhat of a hobby for me. You are welcome to visit my Photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/sandy-lea/
My account is now 'Pro', so I get interesting statistics on visits to my photos. I was interested to know where the visitors were from so I installed a Map counter. But I've found it to be inaccurate. I'm receiving comments from Flickr users from around the globe, but the map counter had only recorded hits from Australia. I've now installed a different Flag counter and also added it to my Facebook account. It seems to be recording the same data from both Facebook and Flickr on each site rather than visits only to Flickr and visits only to Facebook. So I'm not satisfied with this one either, perhaps I will install another.
I'm not interested in a Twitter counter because I really don't Tweet that much, rather I use Twitter for looking at news on breaking stories.
I set up a survey not on Survey Monkey but on my Google Docs account. Also free and simple to use, I found this to be really good and all of my respondents were happy to oblige without fear. I would recommend this is a survey tool.
A Feedburner account has now been set up on my blog. We'll see how that goes.

Twitter

I joined Twitter back in March 2009. Don't use it regularly. It's interesting to follow very current news happenings and then link to further reading.
It's probably more suited to those who have a screen in front of them most of the day and they can flick over to Twitter to view updates.
I follow BBC, ABC, CNN. Used to follow ALIA, but wasn't very interested in their Tweets (sorry alia). I am being followed by a few randoms.
Just read about linking Flickr to Twitter, but decided that I don't want to do that.
